SSteel

Sevillian Steel

In this first English language book on the subject, James Loriega presents an overview of the three distinct styles of Sevillian Steel, the term for the weapons and fighting systems that originated and evolved in Andalusian Spain. His focus here is on the blade most associated with Spain and the one used in the practice of Sevillian Steel: the navaja – an elegant folding knife that took its classic shape in the 17th century. Through photos, rare historical illustrations and colorful stories, Spain’s rich history of blade-handling comes alive in this book, making it an invaluable resource for anyone interested in knives, knife-fighting, European martial arts or Spanish culture.
Baratero

Manual of the Baratero

First published anonymously in 1849 in Madrid, Manual del Baratero has the distinction of being the oldest manual on Spanish knife fighting ever published and is the only known historical text on the subject. The often-cited, rare Spanish manual has long been surrounded by an aura of mystery and intrigue among aficionados of the knife-fighting arts. Now presented in both English and Spanish for the first time, this annotated translation provides a window to the methods of knife fighting practiced by the working class, the criminal class and the Gypsies in 19th century Spain. With original drawings supplemented by illustrations of the period, the book offers a revealing glimpse into the ways in which armas blancas cortas, or small edged weapons, were used on the dark and grimy cobblestone streets of the Spanish underworld.
Scourge of the Dark Continent

Scourge of the Dark Continent

The sjambok is one of the most versatile and effective of all flexible weapons, having been used for centuries in Africa. Here James Loriega offers the first book-length treatment of the defensive use of the sjambok. Loriega, a well-known and respected martial arts expert, covers every aspect of the sjambok: its history, nomenclature, properties, how to practice, stances, strikes, use with other weapons, where to obtain a sjambok and how to best modify it for your personal use. This book will be of interest to all students of flexible weapons systems, and anyone interested in self defense.

Navaja Trainers

Raven Arts Training Navajas

These original navaja trainers have been designed by Maestro Loriega and are handmade by a Filipino craftsman to exacting specifications.  The trainers’ contours follow the profile of an actual 16-inch santolio (fighting navaja), from their clip-pointed blades to the “scorpion tailed” pommels.  Even the edges are beveled. Their design makes them perfectly suited for practicing the myriad thrusts, slashes, and unique scorpion tail tactics traditional to the navaja.  Hundreds are already used in training throughout Spain, Italy, France, Mexico, Canada, the US, and other venues where Maestro Loriega has conducted workshops and seminars on the art of acero sevillano.
